Avoiding Distinctions With Abbreviations

In casual English I can talk about "veg advocacy", "being trans", or "Swarthmore alums". These abbreviations are helpful where more formal English would require a distinction I might not want to make: vegetarian/vegan, transsexual/transgendered, alumnus/alumna.
