Personally, my favorite dance of the month, and look who we have in our line up!!!! AND no inclement weather in the forecast. This dance is ON. January 25, 20198-11:15 PM Guiding Star Grange #1401 Chapman St. Greenfield MA 4th Friday Experienced Contra Dancers' Series presents ELIXIR with NILS FREDLAND. Woot! Elixir blends driving fiddle and guitar with the rich texture and rhythmic excitement of a full horn section, deftly weaving brassy riffs and daring solos in and out of traditional Irish, French Canadian and New England tunes. Elegant melodies evolve into raucous dixieland horn riffs; transcendent harmonies, playful improvisations, and rock, swing and reggae-inspired rhythms weave in and out of traditional and original Irish, French Canadian and New England tunes. The delightful Nils Fredland will be calling challenging dances while playing trombone, interestingly, at the same time. Anna Patton on clarinet and vocals Ethan Hazzard-Watkins on fiddle Jesse Readlynn playing trumpet & flugelhorn Owen Morrison on guitar & foot percussion The EXPERIENCED CONTRA DANCERS' SERIES is the one dance in each month where the program is geared toward only experienced dancers. It features dances with especially challenging and/or unusual choreography as well as dances called with little or no teaching. Medleys are often called as well. The expectation is that the dancers who attend this evening have attended many contra dances and are able to execute a variety of contra figures, such as roll-away, contra corners, heys, California twirls and ocean waves from "muscle memory," without any explanation or instruction, as none is given. In addition, it is expected that dancers coming to the Experienced Dancers' Evening have a solid understanding of the timing and structure of contra dances, and of contra etiquette, as well as knowing where to be at all times during the dance (or how to recover gracefully), and that they are skilled and aware enough to adjust to the different styles of dancers in the hall. This is NOT the dance to bring friends who are new to contra dancing as they will likely not have a positive experience. There are many other dances each month at the Grange where new dancers will get instruction throughout the dance, and many of these offer dedicated workshops for new dancers at the beginning of the evening. The dances in this series are open to all but will be geared toward experienced dancers. "Experienced" means: • You know how to do a roll away, California twirl, pass through to a wave, contra corners, and the basic moves without being taught • You know where to be at the start of each dance phrase and how to recover from a lapse • You assist your partner and neighbor to the next move • You execute flourishes safely and on time without disturbing others • You respond to confusion and missteps by others with grace, encouragement and good humor Admission: $10-15, full-time students $8 This is a scent-free and substance-free event. 4th Friday is also our CONTRA CLOTHING EXCHANGE night. It was fun last month to have a sale. Let's do it again. WE ARE HAVING A SALE. That means, pay whatever you want! The rack is overflowing, especially with skirts and dresses. Hey, guys, if you are perhaps uncomfortable skirt shopping in public, this is the place to shop. Bring those dancing clothes that you are no longer wearing and trade them in for something new-to-you. Only dance clothes, please. Proceeds go to the Friends of the Greenfield Dance. Contact Katie Olmstead (KDOlmstead@aol.com) or Steve Zakon-Anderson (zakon-anderson@...) with questions.

ADINA GORDON finds an outlet for her loves of travel, music, dance and silliness by calling and dancing throughout the US and Canada, creating joy and minor chaos wherever she goes. Combining a voice that makes you want to do what she says with a commitment to using that power for good and not evil, Adina calls contra, English and squares both old and new that cause spontaneous eruptions of joy on dance floors. Here's to start your dance energy going: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHONoa7ku9w The EXPERIENCED CONTRA DANCERS' SERIES is the one dance in each month where the program is geared toward only experienced dancers. New dancers would be overwhelmed at this dance! Show your friends a good time by bringing them to any other contra dance in the month! It's been fun to have people just pay whatever they want so we are going to stick with that. That means, pay whatever you want! We have been "selling" so well; please bring more clothes! Contact Katie Olmstead (KDOlmstead@...) or Steve Zakon-Anderson (zakon-anderson@...) with questions.

Peterborough, NH First Saturday Contra Dance on March 2, featuring Luke Donforth calling with the band Anadama. Contra dance is a fun, relaxed style of folk dance which has flourished in New England since the 1700s. Partners form lines and dance a short sequence of steps with their neighbors. Dancers are welcome to bring a partner or a group of friends, but it’s not necessary – traditionally, dancers are encouraged to change partners throughout the evening. Anadama is Amelia Mason (fiddle), Emily Troll (accordion), and Bethany Waickman (guitar). The trio finds its roots in the traditional music of New England, Ireland, and Quebec. Infusing old and new tunes alike with a distinctly modern kick, it is dynamic, earthy music. Dance caller Luke Donforth started contra dancing a decade ago in New York and has called and shared his love of contra dancing from California to Texas to Vermont. He's an emerging choreographer of new dances, and draws on the wealth of dances and dance traditions from everywhere he travels. The dancing begins at 8:00 PM. The dance also hosts a free jam session for beginning and intermediate musicians at 6:30 PM and a workshop for new dancers at 7:30 PM. Admission is $10 or $7 for students and seniors. The dance takes place in the historic Town House in Peterborough, NH at 1 Grove Street. For more information call 603.762.0235 or visit www.monadnockfolk.org http://www.monadnockfolk.org/. Worcester dances are held the second Saturday of most months from 7:30pm to 10:30pm, with a half-hour beginners' lesson beforehand. <https://worcesterdance.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9c0cfe8e7b204045fb 061d993&id=d862e37fb1&e=0f71f2495d> Find us on Facebook | <http://us7.forward-to-friend.com/forward?u=9c0cfe8e7b204045fb061d993&id=90f 0dcafea&e=0f71f2495d> Forward to a friend Copyright C 2019 Worcester Contra Dancers, All rights reserved. This Friday, March 22, EXPERIENCED CONTRA DANCERS' SERIES presents.... WILD is Wild Asparagus blasting into our 4th Friday Experienced Contras Series. This is NOT the Wild Asparagus where you bring all your friends for their first contra dance. This IS the Wild Asparagus high energy fabulousness at a dance that is just for experienced dancers. This will be epic! Friday March 22Guiding Star Grange #1401 Chapman St. Greenfield. MA8 PM to 11:15 PMAdmission: $10-$15; students, $8 We know these musicians! Ann Percival driving everything with piano, guitar and vocals. David Cantieni on all those wind instruments. Becky Tracy and her masterful fiddling. Guest Corey DiMario on bass. And calling for us, and playing bodhran and perhaps concertina, is George Marshall. The EXPERIENCED CONTRA DANCERS' SERIES is the one dance in each month where the program is geared toward only experienced dancers. It features dances with especially challenging and/or unusual choreography as well as dances called with little or no teaching. Medleys are often called as well. Our dances are intended to give experienced dancers the opportunity to explore ways in which to challenge themselves and improve their skills as dance partners while experiencing complex dances and immense joy! Please do NOT bring new dancers to this dance. You think they'll have fun but more likely, they will be overwhelmed. Remember that the pace is faster than a regular dance and little or no instruction. Bring them to any other Friday or Saturday dance at the Grange where new dancers will get instruction throughout the dance, and many of these offer dedicated workshops for new dancers at the beginning of the evening. New dancers would be over-their-heads at this dance. Show your friends a good time by bringing them to any other contra dance in the month! NOTE THAT THE CONTRA PROM IS COMING UP on March 30. BRING PROM-LIKE CLOTHES or BUY SOMETHING SPECIAL. It's been fun to have people just pay whatever they want so we are going to stick with that. That means, pay whatever you want! We have been "selling" so well; please bring more clothes! Contact Katie Olmstead (KDOlmstead@...) or Steve Zakon-Anderson (zakon-anderson@...) with questions.

The Experienced Contra Dancers' Series....Time for a road trip? I promise NO SNOW on the roads. Friday April 26 (it's spring for real!)8:00-11:15 PMGuiding Star Grange #1401 Chapman St. Greenfield FIRETRUCK digs into fiddle tunes with drive and playfulness and a love of dance music. They are familiar faces in the New England contra dance scene from countless other combos, and they get a special joy and spark from playing together: combining Emily’s firecracker fiddling, Anna’s spitfire clarinetting and the sizzle and lift of Bruce’s rhythmic backup, like a hot bed of coals. Their music will touch your heart and lift your feet! Emily Troll plays fiddle and accordion and currently hails from Portland, ME. An avid lover of French-Canadian and old-time traditions, she's spent many years at Pinewoods and Maine Fiddle camp honing her skills. You'll often see Emily playing with her all-girl band, Anadama. Bruce Rosen has been part of Boston's contra and English country dance community since the mid-70s as a dancer and musician. His rock solid piano and guitar accompaniment is sought after by many of New England's best contra dance musicians. Anna Patton grew up in a musical family in northern Vermont and was immersed from a young age in an eclectic mix of jazz, classical, traditional and world music. These days she gets to incorporate many of those influences into playing clarinet for different kinds of dancing, including English, contra, swing, and blues. For the last decade, Anna's innovative dance band Elixir has toured extensively around the U.S. and abroad. Sue Rosen, one of New England's favorite callers for over 25 years, has led dances across the U.S. and at dance weekends, camps, and festivals from Anchorage to Antwerp. She has built a collection of great dances, featuring the best of contemporary choreography, and has written contras that have become part of the standard repertoire of dance callers across the contradance world. Her speedy and encouraging walk-throughs will have you cruising through dance after wonderful dance. The EXPERIENCED CONTRA DANCERS' SERIES is the one dance in each month where the program is geared toward only experienced dancers. The Greenfield Experienced Contra Dancers' Series presents POLARIS with LISA GREENLEAF Friday (4th Fridays) May 24Guiding Star Grange #1Greenfield MA8:00-11:15 And since it sure feels like summer, there will be Klondike Bars and ice pops for sale at the break for a buck each. A contra dance band born and raised in the rich music scene of Western Massachusetts and Vermont, these folks have been soaking in musical stew since before they could walk. They came together as Polaris in 2015, and continue to delight dancers throughout New England and beyond. Consisting of Marta Bartholomew and Rose Jackson on twin fiddles, Sam Zakon-Anderson on piano, and Jesse Ball on accordion, guitar, hammer dulcimer, and feet, they infuse their music with youthful energy and exuberance that fills up the hall. Lisa Greenleaf needs no introduction but I'll give her an introduction anyway. Lisa has been treating dancers across the country to her high spirited, witty calling for many years, and is known for precise walk-throughs of zesty and flowing dances. Whether she is presenting cool contras, hot squares, or focused callers' workshops, Lisa engages the crowd with her humor and community spirit. This is exciting! Lisa and Polaris! The dances in this series are open to all but will be geared toward experienced dancers. "Experienced" means: • You know how to do a roll away, California twirl, pass through to a wave, contra corners, and the basic moves without being taught • You know where to be at the start of each dance phrase and how to recover from a lapse • You assist your partner and neighbor to the next move • You execute flourishes safely and on time without disturbing others • You respond to confusion and missteps by others with grace, encouragement and good humor Admission: $10-15, full-time students $8 We strive for a scent-free and substance-free event. 4th Friday is also our CONTRA CLOTHING EXCHANGE night. Our new system is "pay whatever you want!" Or barter! Contact Katie Olmstead (KDOlmstead@...) or Steve Zakon-Anderson (Zakon-Anderson@...) with questions.

Those proceeds go to the Friends of the Greenfield Dance. Now, about our performers! The Mean Lids have a huge following: Mix one part smooth Irish session, one part spicy cajun-zydeco, one part hot western swing, with two parts driving southern old-time and take it down to the local dance hall. There you have the Mean Lids, a young, energetic acoustic trio currently residing in central Illinois. Playing a mix of original and traditional tunes, the Mean Lids produce an exciting, unique sound born from the living traditions of American fiddle and dance music. They are: Miriam Larson—flute, jaw harp. Ben Smith—fiddle, baritone fiddle, banjo, low whistle, kick drum. Matt Turino—guitar, fiddle, feet. Little peek at their music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzqZ__BmiL0 Dana Parkinson is based in Florida, and is known for her creative programming, sense of humor, and no-nonsense walk-throughs. I love what she has on her website: I call Contra dances to... Celebrate life through music Weave communities through dance Spread kindness and laughter. Also calling is our very own Steve Zakon-Anderson. Middle school teacher by day and a favorite caller when the sun goes down. Known for his clarity, wide range of dance choices and 8th grade-level humor, we always have a good time with Steve. Sunday's caller is the vivacious NYC caller, Alex Deis-Lauby. As a caller of contras and English country dance, she'll be the perfect high energy caller to make ECD fun and accessible for contra dancers. As the title of the event says, ECD and contra dancing are cousins who just speak a slightly different language. We hope you leave the afternoon with a taste for more English country dancing (Monday nights in this area plus more; beginners always welcome). Our musicians for the afternoon session: Corey Walters on flute and melodion Eleanor Lincoln on violin and viola And Joyce Crouch on piano. More fine print: Housing. I, Katie Olmstead, can help you! No promises but I have a list of local people who are happy to host dancers from afar. Please email me at KDOlmstead@.... I also recommend checking out camping, especially Barton's Cove. You'll find other dancers there. P.S. People are starting to reach out to me for housing. I have a limited number of hosts. If you intend to come and want help with housing, the sooner, the better. Note that we aim to have a scent-free and substance-free event. Special note on English Country Dancing: ECD is a cousin of contra, more elegant and dancerly, less of a contact sport, but utterly gorgeous. Most of the music is from the 1600's and was written in conjunction with each dance. Some people think ECD is too slow. Yes, there are some more measured dances but believe me, they are stunning. Many are not slow in the slightest. Personally (me: Katie) I love having both in my life. I love to dance beautifully in ECD and more fast and furious in contra. This ECD is carefully designed for contra dancers. Please come at the beginning of the session because there will be lots of clear instruction. This will evolve into more complex dances as the afternoon goes on. Since Alex calls both kinds of dance, she'll make this fully accessible to all. You may well end up loving English and want more! For local dancers, we'll have flyers (or talk to me). English happens at least once a week here in the Valley. Sorry this is going on and on. Remember the criteria for deciding if you are experienced enough for Experienced Contras. The EXPERIENCED CONTRA DANCERS' SERIES is the one dance in each month where the program is geared toward only experienced dancers. 4th Fridays, Experienced Contra Dancers' Series, July 26, Greenfield MAGuiding Star Grange #1401 Chapman St. Greenfield.8:00 to 11:15 Don't we always give you a great experience, all you experienced contra dancers? This will be no exception! Brooklyn Swing started out playing for a swing dance in Philadephia and has evolved into a dance band for many genres. They are well known in the Northeast for their unique blend of fiddle tunes, Klezmer music and swing/blues. With fiddle and clarinet as the lead instruments, the world is their musical oyster and they are unafraid to explore!! They are: Danny Elias on clarinet Sam Zygmuntowicz on fiddle Bill Peek on piano Marco Brehm on bass Chuck Abell, known to us as a musician with Tempest and other bands, this time he takes the microphone to call for us. Chuck finds dancing, playing, and calling as mutually reinforcing activities, each one informing the others. Chuck wrote his first contra dance in 2002, and gained experience by being a guest caller over the course of many years. Chuck began calling in earnest in 2011 and has since become a regular on the regional dance scene as well as touring extensively (currently on a road trip to San Francisco). Back home, Chuck helps organize and facilitate the Rochester Callers Night, a monthly event geared towards nurturing beginning callers and providing more experienced callers with opportunities to collaborate and to try out more complicated dances or even original dances. Chuck has a secret claim to fame: he is the first person to understand the origin of my cats' names (Puck and Snug). Hey, guys, if you are perhaps uncomfortable skirt shopping in public, this is the place to shop. Bring those dancing clothes that you are no longer wearing and trade them in for something new-to-you. Only dance clothes, please. I (Katie) keep seeing people dancing in my dance clothes; it's a trip! Proceeds go to the Friends of the Greenfield Dance. I think we can assume it will be a hot night. If so, I'll bring the "cooling bucket" and sell Klondikes and good fruit ice pops for a buck at the break. Contact Katie Olmstead or Steve Zakon-Anderson with questions.

Hello all: This is an early reminder for the Kingston dance taking place on August 24th. It’s summertime and it never hurts to give a little extra notice of things happening in the near future. We also want to remind you that Tod Whittemore is making his “annual” return engagement to Call for us, with Carol Bittenson and Debbie Knight providing wonderful tunes. This has become an August tradition, and is always a GREAT dance! This dance will also be structured as “An Evening of Traditional Contras and Squares”. After hearing from several dancers on the subject, Tod suggested a 50/50 mix of contras and squares, with the occasional couples dance thrown in for good measure. Sounds like a blast! So, if you love the traditional stuff as much as many of us do, please spread the word and plan to be there on the 24th. Hope you are enjoying this beautiful summer! Best regards, Glenn, Gale and Sarah

Our rack is a bit thinned out: Bring more clothes! Our new system is "pay whatever you want!" Or barter! I will sell Klondikes and good fruit ice pops for a buck at the break. Contact Katie Olmstead (KDOlmstead@...) or Steve Zakon-Anderson (zakon-anderson@...) with questions.

Greenfield 4th Friday Experienced Contra Dancers' Series presents a hot night of cool dancing: BUDDY SYSTEM with WILL MENTOR. If you are an experienced contra dancer and don't have something else burning a hole in your calendar in the 27th, Greenfield is the place to be! BUDDY SYSTEM plays dance music with heart, seemingly bottomless energy, and a deep groove. Noah VanNorstrand (fiddle, foot percussion) and Julie Vallimont (piano, jawharp) are known for their creativity, big sound, tight arrangements, and connection with the dancers. They use their duo to its full potential: Noah’s fiddle and foot percussion powerhouse drives the band, matched by Julie’s rich, nuanced, versatile piano playing. If that isn't enough of a reason to come out and dance with us, we have WILL MENTOR calling. Will is a contra and square dance caller from Northern Vermont known for his clear teaching, upbeat wit, and relaxed stage presence. He loves to choreograph evenings with a variety of dances and tempos that at times surprise and always delight, all the while keeping intact his guiding principle as a caller: "It's about the dancers!" The EXPERIENCED CONTRA DANCERS' SERIES is the one dance in each month where the program is geared toward only experienced dancers. PLEASE DO NOT BRING NEW DANCERS TO THIS DANCE. You think they'll have fun but more likely, they will be overwhelmed. Remember that the pace is faster than a regular dance and little or no instruction. "Experienced" means: • You know how to do a roll away, California twirl, pass through to a wave, contra corners, and the basic moves without being taught • You know where to be at the start of each dance phrase and how to recover from a lapse • You assist your partner and neighbor to the next move • You execute flourishes safely and on time without disturbing others • You respond to confusion and missteps by others with grace, encouragement and good humor We strive for a scent-free and substance-free event. 4th Friday is also our CONTRA CLOTHING EXCHANGE night. Our rack is a bit thinned out: BRING MORE CLOTHES! Our new system is "pay whatever you want!" Or barter! Contact Katie Olmstead (Katie@KatieOlmstead.com) or Steve Zakon-Anderson (Zakon-Anderson@...) with questions.

As the song continues, dancers progress along a line of other dancers, regularly swapping partners and enjoying new company while mastering the pattern of the current dance. New England's answer to square dancing is very easy to learn and very welcoming to newcomers. Worcester dances are held the second Saturday of most months from 7:30pm to 10:30pm, with a half-hour beginners' lesson beforehand. <https://worcesterdance.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9c0cfe8e7b204045fb 061d993&id=aa15ac4dd9&e=0f71f2495d> Find us on Facebook | <http://us7.forward-to-friend.com/forward?u=9c0cfe8e7b204045fb061d993&id=1b9 c1584cb&e=0f71f2495d> Forward to a friend Copyright C 2019 Worcester Contra Dancers, All rights reserved.
