Forwarded from David Millstone: Among the most influential callers in the entire history of contra dancing is Dudley Laufman, of Canterbury, NH. If Ralph Page kept the dance traditions of the Monadnock region alive and helped present them to new audiences in the 1940s and beyond, Dudley is the individual who brought a younger generation of dancers and musicians into the scene starting in the late 1960s and into the 1970s. Indeed, a direct connection can be found between Dudley and dance series that sprang up all over the country in the subsequent 10-15 years. Dudley Laufman, now age 75 and still calling between 250-300 gigs a year, will be honored at the 20th Annual Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend held at UNH, Durham, NH, January 12 - 14. The Canterbury Country Dance Orchestra will be playing for the opening dance Friday night, Jan 12. During Saturday afternoon a full-length documentary by David Millstone about Dudley Laufman will be shown and a dance will be held in Dudley's honor. Money Musk will be one of the dances for sure. Featured callers for the weekend include Tony Parkes and Carol Ormand, and the bands are equally stellar: Old Grey Goose, from Maine, and a trio comprising Bob McQuillen on piano, Vince O'Donnell on fiddle, and Laurie Andres on accordion. The Ralph Page weekend brings together dancers and musicians and callers from all over New England and beyond. (I know of folks flying in from California, Arizona, and Washington specifically to attend this event.) The weekend presents a unique program, celebrating the dances and music of today while also honoring our rich dancing heritage. Plenty of dancing, music jam sessions, times when musicians can join the band on stage, workshops on music and on calling, an open mic for callers, mealtime conversations with folks who share your dancing interests, a well-stocked CD store... who could ask for anything more? You can download a copy of the brochure for the weekend at www.neffa.org/rplw_brochure.pdf including a Registration Form, or you can pick one up at the Northern Spy dance on Saturday. Tickets for individual sessions available at the door. RPDLW website at www.neffa.org/rplw.html . Lodging is available at several nearby hotels, or dancers looking to keep costs low can obtain hospitality with local dancers. There is also a special reduced rate for folks attending the whole weekend for the first time.
The Third Saturday Series at the Concord Scout House cordially invites you to our annual Holiday dance.
