Subject:Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend, January 12-14
Message:

Forwarded from David Millstone:

Among the most influential callers in the entire history of contra
dancing is
Dudley Laufman, of Canterbury, NH. If Ralph Page kept the dance
traditions of
the Monadnock region alive and helped present them to new audiences
in the 1940s
and beyond, Dudley is the individual who brought a younger generation
of dancers
and musicians into the scene starting in the late 1960s and into the
1970s.
Indeed, a direct connection can be found between Dudley and dance
series that
sprang up all over the country in the subsequent 10-15 years.

Dudley Laufman, now age 75 and still calling between 250-300 gigs a
year, will
be honored at the 20th Annual Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend held at
UNH,
Durham, NH, January 12 - 14. The Canterbury Country Dance Orchestra
will be
playing for the opening dance Friday night, Jan 12.

During Saturday afternoon a full-length documentary by David
Millstone about
Dudley Laufman will be shown and a dance will be held in Dudley's
honor. Money
Musk will be one of the dances for sure.

Featured callers for the weekend include Tony Parkes and Carol
Ormand, and the
bands are equally stellar: Old Grey Goose, from Maine, and a trio
comprising Bob
McQuillen on piano, Vince O'Donnell on fiddle, and Laurie Andres on
accordion.

The Ralph Page weekend brings together dancers and musicians and
callers from
all over New England and beyond. (I know of folks flying in from
California,
Arizona, and Washington specifically to attend this event.) The
weekend presents
a unique program, celebrating the dances and music of today while
also honoring
our rich dancing heritage. Plenty of dancing, music jam sessions,
times when
musicians can join the band on stage, workshops on music and on
calling, an open
mic for callers, mealtime conversations with folks who share your
dancing
interests, a well-stocked CD store... who could ask for anything more?

You can download a copy of the brochure for the weekend at
www.neffa.org/rplw_brochure.pdf including a Registration Form, or
you can pick
one up at the Northern Spy dance on Saturday. Tickets for individual
sessions
available at the door. RPDLW website at www.neffa.org/rplw.html .
Lodging is
available at several nearby hotels, or dancers looking to keep costs
low can
obtain hospitality with local dancers. There is also a special
reduced rate for
folks attending the whole weekend for the first time.

There will be a special Rehoboth Holiday Contra Dance this Friday,
December 29, at 8 p.m. Linda Leslie will be calling, and music will
be performed by Michelle Kaminsky and French Toast. I hope you all
want to celebrate as much as I do! Bringing food to share with
everyone will be greatly appreciated!

Long-time Rehoboth dancer Michael Herrera, who is teaching in Austria
this year, was not able to make it home for the holidays. Michael
sends his best wishes to everyone. If you like, you can email him at
herrera@....

Dancers, please be aware that the downstairs should be used only for
the restrooms. Children are not permitted to play downstairs.
Parents, if you are bringing children who do not dance, please be
responsible for supervising them and seeing that they do not go into
the other parts of the building--either below the lobby level or
above it. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

See you dancing!
Shawn

Subject:Jamaica Plain contra, Saturday, December 30
Message:

Please join us for our almost-New-Year's dance party in Jamaica Plain
this coming Saturday.

WHEN: Saturday, December 30, 7:30-11:00 PM
WHO: Caller: Linda Leslie; Music: Brazen Hussies
WHERE: First Church (U-U) of Jamaica Plain, Centre & Eliot Sts.

Give 2006 a proper sendoff by dancing off your holiday feasts in
Jamaica Plain! We have the fabulous Linda Leslie calling, and those
Brazen Hussies Roberta Sutter and Cathy Mason playing piano and fiddle
respectively. How could you possibly ask for a better way to get
yourself energized for '07? Do come, you'll be glad you did.

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

The Jamaica Plain dance is gender-role free: men and women are equally
likely to dance either role, and gender-specific terms are avoided.
Those dancing the traditional men's role wear a ribbon called an
"armband" (not always worn on the arm) and are themselves called
"armbands"; their partners are called "bare-arms".

Admission is $10.00 (or less if you can't afford it).

We're at the First Church Unitarian-Universalist in downtown Jamaica
Plain, on Eliot St. at the corner of Centre St., opposite the monument.

Please bring soft-soled shoes.
Please do not wear perfume, cologne, or other scented products, as some
of our dancers are chemically sensitive, and experience discomfort when
exposed to these materials.

For more information on this and other dances in our series, see our web
site, http://www.lcfd.org/jp/.
For detailed directions to the church, see
http://www.lcfd.org/jp/directions.html.
